I just read a new study in the Journal of Food Science where researchers infused fish oil into goat cheese to help people get adequate amounts of the two essential fatty acids EPA and DHA.

Now, if you’ve been following any health news coverage in recent years, you already know that Omega 3 fish oil helps you fight inflammation and boosts brain power, however, you might not  have considered using fish oil for a sluggish thyroid.

Another study in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry showed that omega 3s could increase thyroid hormone signaling within your liver. This is significant because the thyroid gland produces two hormones that regulate our cell metabolic rate. They are called T3 and T4. These two thyroid hormones determine how effectively our liver cells metabolize the carbohydrates, protein, and fat that we consume. When our cells have adequate amounts of essential Omega 3 fatty acids, these thyroid hormones work much more effectively at burning fat. How cool is that!?

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. Hypothyroidism symptoms include fatigue, low libido, menstrual irregularities, brain fog, constipation, depression, and perhaps most frustratingly, weight gain. According to the National Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Information Service, hypothyroidism affects about 5% of Americans, most of them women.

When your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones, metabolism bogs down - becomes sluggish. Your body can’t effectively metabolize food, which often results in weight gain, or, the inability to lose those stubborn last few pounds.

Fish oil, then, might be just what you need to crank up your metabolism by boosting the efficiency of your thyroid gland to produce those hormones.

Whether or not you have hypothyroid, fish oil has been proven to be a very important supplement to add to your daily regimen for helping to metabolize our food.

In additional studies by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, similar results were found. The first one found that when omega 3s were added to the diet of 27 women with type 2 diabetes, the women burned more fat without interfering with their insulin sensitivity. The other study found that fish oil, combined with regular exercise, burned fat and reduced the risk for heart disease.

It’s nice to know that fish oil, which is available in almost every local grocery and drug store, can provide a little extra boost for your metabolism!

Best of Health,

Kathi
