Bye Bye Back Pain

Here's a link to the Early Show interview of Dr. Marcus, head of pain research for the New York School of Medicine.

He gives some great tips about household chores and snow shoveling and not wearing high heels - flats are no good either.  A small heel aligns your spine correctly so that when you walk you aren't putting strain on your lower back.  It's a good read if you have lower back concerns.

Here's a tip from me about reducing your back pain.  Walk like John Wayne.  Seriously!  Many people take each step by throwing a knee out in front and then putting weight on the leg and this is really hard on your knees.  Practice around your house first until you feel more comfortable walking this way, but it's best to try to lead with your hip socket.  Think of leading each step with your hip or the top of your thigh.  This is much better for your knees.  Also, take a few seconds before you begin walking anywhere to stop and check your posture.  Lengthen your spine all the way up through your neck, square your shoulders and relax them, and make sure your head is looking ahead.  Keeping your gaze 10-20 feet in front of you usually works at keeping your head up.

Also, SMILE!  Whenever you are walking - even if it's only down the hall to another room, you are working muscles.

Best of Health pardner!
