EFT is Making Headlines!

OK, so you know that I consider Dr. Mercola a reliable expert in the field of natural healing – right along with Drs. Andrew Weill, Christiane Northrup, Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen. Well, I just found out that Dr. Mercola not only recommends, but has been using EFT in his practice for years. EFT is Emotional Freedom Tapping. It’s a process of changing our subconscious responses to situations like fear of water, smoking, limiting beliefs about money, and more. It’s now being used by Gary Craig with much success in healing war veterans who suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.)

I have been using EFT personally for over a year and I recommend it to my clients as well. It’s easy and the results are very powerful. Tapping on long standing fears and old traumas can bring more peace and joy into your life.

We use the tips of our fingers to tap on specific vital acupressure/acupuncture points along the body’s Meridians (energy pathways).   While we’re tapping, we repeat a phrase that address whatever fear or belief it is that we’re working on - simple, yet powerful. Here’s a link to a site where you can get free “how to” information along with a diagram of the tapping points. http://www.eftuniverse.com/index.php?option=com_subscribe&Itemid=17

Berries Are Also Good For Your Brain

Another new study has been done on the powerful effect of berries on our health.  This time scientists have studied how berries can help our brains function properly well into old age. The results of this study, announced at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS), concluded that berries activate the brain’s natural “housekeeper” mechanism, which cleans up and recycles toxic proteins linked to age-related memory loss.

Shibu Poulose, Ph.D., who presented the report, said previous research suggested that one factor involved in aging is a steady decline in the body’s ability to protect itself against inflammation and oxidative damage which leaves people vulnerable to degenerative brain diseases, heart disease, cancer, and other age-related disorders.

“The good news is that natural compounds called polyphenolics found in fruits, vegetables and nuts have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect that may protect against age-associated decline,” said Poulose, who is with the U. S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging in Boston. In this new research, Poulose focused on another reason why nerve function declines with aging. It involves a reduction in the brain’s natural house-cleaning process. Cells called microglia are the housekeepers and they remove and recycle biochemical debris that otherwise would interfere with brain function.

“But in aging, microglia fail to do their work, and debris builds up,” Poulose explained. “In addition, the microglia become over-activated and actually begin to damage healthy cells in the brain. Our research suggests that the polyphenolics in berries have a rescuing effect. They seem to restore the normal housekeeping function. These findings are the first to show these effects of berries.”

Now, this study was done on mice and more studies are scheduled which will include human brains, but it makes sense to me that with all the previous evidence on berries' powerful anti-aging aspects, this is just one more good reason to eat your berries every day. I recommend a handful of strawberries, blueberries and walnuts every morning for breakfast mixed in with a little plain yogurt. Great tasting and good for your brain!

The New Cast of Dancing With The Stars

Well, ABC revealed the new season of Dancing With the Stars will include one of my favorite young singer/actresses, Brandi – I just loved her in Cinderella, another Disney character, Kyle Massey and - good grief, Bristol Palin! You have to admit, this young woman has guts! Jennifer Grey is competing – I hope she remembers those fancy steps she learned from the great Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing. We have another football player this season, Kurt Warner. He led his team to victory in the Super Bowl last year, but I wonder how far his fancy footsteps will get him in this tough competition. Margaret Chow is one funny woman, and Mike Sorrentino, Rick Fox and Audrina Patridge are all preparing for their “spray tans” and sequins.

This season we have three Baby Boomers competing with David Hasselhoff and Michael Bolton as our leading men, and the formidable Florence Henderson is our Boomer Generation female favorite. Now there’s a woman who knows how to stay young! She’s still as active in her career, family, and fund raising roles as ever and now she’s competing on Dancing – good luck Florence! She’s my pick to win it all.

Have fun watching the competition and join in the fun! “Cut a rug” (old slang for dancing) in your living room every week while watching the show. It’ll be tons of fun, and great exercise for the whole family. Dancing for 30 minutes can burn as much as 300 or more calories, depending on how hard you work. Plus you’ll also be laughing which will release more endorphins into your body, giving your immune system a big boost.

Pistachio Encrusted Chicken is Yummy!

I recently tasted a yummy Pistachio Encrusted Chicken with Coconut Chili Ginger Sauce and just had to share the recipe with you. Fabulous end of summer fare, that’s not only tasty, but good for you too.

One cup of pistachios has 26 grams of protein, is a good source of vitamins B6, copper and manganese and has a whopping 1282 mg of potassium. Pistachios are also low in both sodium and cholesterol.

Here’s a link to the recipe which was originally created by Art Smith for some guests of Oprah Winfrey. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/recipe?id=11439389

Try it out and let me know what you think!

What Do You Think of Barefoot Running?

Aug 20, 2010
Bookmark and Share

There is quite a controversy in the world of runners lately about the trend toward barefoot running. I have to laugh at this because about 12 years ago, when I was working out in a gym, I always ran on the treadmill barefoot. Back then, most people laughed at me, but one friend mentioned an Olympic runner named Abebe Bekelia who in 1960 won the Olympic Marathon race, barefoot.

Then there’s “Barefoot Rick” who shed his shoes in 2003 and has run 26 marathons barefoot. He runs barefoot to raise money for charity – plus he says he’s more comfortable.

I ran barefoot because I prefer being barefoot. If it was possible to never wear shoes, I’d be there.

Today’s shoeless trend is taking off thanks to the popularity of Vibram Five Finger Shoes. These are meant to mimic the feel of running barefoot, but have rubber soles to prevent injuries like cuts and scrapes and also to keep sidewalk debris off your feet. Movie stars like Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum run in them, and according to CNN, the Five Fingers have become so popular that the company is having a hard time keeping them in stock—and stopping counterfeiters from selling knock-offs online.

When I checked in with a few medical web sites, here’s what I found – more controversy!

But another foot expert says less impact on the heel might be better, at least for some people.  "It could potentially be better for someone who does pronate excessively," says James Christina, DPM, director of scientific affairs for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).  Pronation is the natural slight inward-rolling motion of the foot as someone walks or runs.  "Some people are going to be very well-adapted to barefoot running." Christina says.

Dr. Joseph Mercola, another trusted resource for Natural Health Solutions is actually running barefoot himself these days and sites research by Michael Warburton, a physical therapist in Australia, who found that running barefoot decreases the likelihood of ankle sprains and chronic injuries such as plantar fasclitis. Warburton's research was published in the journal Sports Science:  “Running barefoot is associated with a substantially lower prevalence of acute injuries of the ankle and chronic injuries of the lower leg in developing countries, but well-designed studies of the effects of barefoot and shod running on injury are lacking.

All of the medical experts say that if you have diabetes, or if your immune system is compromised or if you are at risk for infection, do not attempt to run barefoot, but other than that, if you want to give it a try – test it out!

If you do try, let me know how you like it!
